The Couatl of the Red Seal, known to Scuto only as his master, was an ancient and unusually powerful Couatl — more than an ordinary member of its kind — who guarded the Temple of the Red Seal, the prison of the Rakshasa Breath Reaper. [heralds-b#245]
Overview
It could not speak, bound by a vow. [heralds-a#3 · heralds-b#378] It was serpentine, with radiant rainbow feathers touched by gold, though its aura had been dimmed by centuries of war; its eyes were said to hold both compassion and sorrow. [heralds-b#246] Rather than kill Breath Reaper, it judged that the Rakshasa's death would wound the world itself, since his breath was bound to the world's own flow of chi — so it sealed him instead of slaying him. [heralds-b#393]
For reasons not fully recorded, it kept itself hidden rather than confronting Scuto openly.

History
Scuto was once its pupil, before turning to the path of death and chi-stealing power under the Rakshasa's influence. [heralds-b#378 · heralds-b#246] The Couatl came to see Scuto as fallen beyond redemption. [heralds-b#245] When the Red Seal later broke, the temple was destroyed and the Couatl died; the Rakshasa went free and returned to its own realm. [heralds-a#5]
